Facts about lobsters

Why are lobsters so expensive?
Lobsters are usually not grown commercially in fish farms. Most of the lobsters come from the wild, mostly from Maine, Ausralia, and New Zealand. Moreover, it takes a lobster 2years to be marketable size. In addition, the quantity of the lobsters decreased due to overfishing. High demand on the lobsters, and the low quantity of the lobsters are causing high price.

Are Lobsters endangered?
There are certain kinds of lobster that are endangered. They are Giant freshwater Crayfish, Lobster claw crab, and Redclaw crayfish. That is why there are regulations for catching the lobsters. There are limit to the amount and the size of the lobster. However, not all lobsters are endangered. Even though the quantity in the markets can decrease caused by overfishing, there are still a lot of lobsters in the ocean. 

How does lobsters grow?
An adult female lobster will produce approximately 10,000 eggs and held under the tail of the lobster, and carried for about an year. They become released as larvae. However, only less than one percent of the eggs will survive to be an adult. Lobsters grow by molting, or shedding their shells. Just after they molt, they are soft and fragile until their new shell has hardened. During this time, the lobster buries itself in the mud to hide from its natural enemies. It takes seven years for a lobster to grow to be legal harvesting size. 

How do I hold a lobster safely?
Lobsters will come to you with rubber bands holding their claws. The person who catches the lobsters put the rubber bands on to prevent lobsters damaging each others. To pick up the lobsters, they have to be grabbed by their back. You have to be careful not to let your fingers get below the tail.
